On May 27th, at the Vietnam House in Canberra, Australia, Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam received the High Commissioner of Nauru to Australia, H.E.Ms. Camilla Solomon, and leaders of several diplomatic missions from South Pacific island nations, in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Nauru (June 21, 2006 - June 21, 2026).
At the meeting, High Commissioner Camilla Solomon assessed that 20 years is not a very long time compared to the long history of the two countries, but the two sides have created a solid foundation of friendship and become reliable partners.
Despite complex geopolitical changes in the region and globally, the relationship between Viet Nam and Nauru continues to be nurtured, demonstrating a spirit of mutual respect, support, and mutually beneficial cooperation at the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral forums.
Commissioner Camilla Solomon emphasized that Nauru, a country rich in marine resources, has always considered Viet Nam a model of development and a potential partner in supplying essential goods for daily life, cooperating in tuna fishing, and developing Nauru's infrastructure.
As a small island nation vulnerable to climate change, especially rising sea levels, Nauru finds common ground with Viet Nam in strengthening close coordination at global multilateral forums to promote international commitments on climate and environmental protection. Nauru relies entirely on imported food supplies and therefore hopes that Viet Nam will increase trade and supply essential consumer goods to ensure food security for Nauru.
Nauru welcomes Vietnamese businesses seeking opportunities for cooperation in sustainable fishing, aquaculture, infrastructure development, and promoting people-to-people connections and exchanges.
For his part, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam expressed his appreciation for the friendly relationship between Viet Nam and Nauru, especially the cooperation between the two countries in multilateral forums; and emphasized that despite the vast geographical distance and significant differences in area and population, the two countries always find common ground on many international issues, including marine environmental protection, respect for international law, and issues related to climate change.
The ambassador stated that the two countries have great potential for cooperation and that Viet Nam is ready to share its experience in agricultural development, trade cooperation, and aquaculture and fisheries.
Ambassador Pham Hung Tam requested that Nauru and other Pacific island nations actively support Viet Nam's candidate for the position of Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026-2035 term in the upcoming UN vote in June.
During the meeting, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam and High Commissioner Camilla Solomon also agreed that the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations would open a new chapter in bilateral friendship and cooperation, helping the two countries to strengthen opportunities to promote substantive cooperation for the benefit of the people of both countries and make a positive contribution to peace, stability and sustainable development in the region. On this occasion, the leaders of the two countries will also exchange congratulatory messages.
