On June 16th, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Science and Technology , Minister Vu Hai Quan held a working meeting with the Chief Scientist of Australia, Tony Haymet.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister stated that Vietnam is focusing on developing strategic technologies such as AI, semiconductors, and biotechnology; while also continuing to improve the legal framework to create a favorable environment for research, innovation, and technology application.
Appreciating the potential for cooperation between the two countries, Minister Vu Hai Quan affirmed that Vietnam wishes to expand scientific and technological cooperation with Australia in a direction that links research with commercialization and practical development needs.
The Minister proposed that the two sides strengthen cooperation in three main directions, including: implementing cooperation projects of appropriate scale that can quickly produce products and bring research results to market, and on that basis gradually expanding into larger-scale cooperation programs.
Strengthen connections between government agencies, research institutes, universities, and businesses of both countries. Promote cooperation in priority technology areas and industries with complementary strengths.
During the meeting, Professor Tony Haymet stated that Australia is implementing major reforms in science policy planning through the Ambitious Australia Report, shifting from an investment mechanism based primarily on individual proposals to building a national priority portfolio, selecting investments based on national interests and long-term development goals.
He also emphasized that Australia is developing research clusters that connect scientific infrastructure, universities, businesses, and testing facilities, aiming to form an innovation ecosystem and promote the commercialization of research results.
According to Professor Tony Haymet, this is the first time Australia has developed a system for strategically prioritizing scientific investment. Based on this, the delegation hopes to learn from Vietnam's experience in developing strategies for science, technology, and innovation, identifying priority areas, and organizing the implementation of research programs.
The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on methods for identifying research investment priorities, developing scientific infrastructure, the linkages between development strategies, research programs and research projects, as well as mechanisms for mobilizing resources to support the development of science, technology and innovation.
