On September 22, in the dignified setting of Australia’s National Carillon overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, the ASEAN Committee in Canberra (ACC) hosted a concert to commemorate the 59th Anniversary of ASEAN Day, bringing together nearly 200 delegates and guests from Australian institutions and organisations, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

The event was attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam, along with a large number of diplomats and staff from the Embassies and diplomatic missions of ASEAN Member States in Canberra. Their presence contributed to an atmosphere of friendship and solidarity, vividly reflecting the spirit of ASEAN unity in Australia.

In her welcoming remarks, Brunei High Commissioner to Australia Nooraslena Sallehuddin, Chair of the ACC, underscored the significance of ASEAN Day and the spirit of cooperation and solidarity among ASEAN Member States. The ASEAN Anthem was then performed by representatives of the ASEAN Member States, accompanied by the resonant bells played by carillonist Thomas Laue, marking the opening of the special musical programme.

Under the theme “Unity and Peace,” carillonist Thomas Laue performed 11 representative musical pieces, each showcasing one of the 11 ASEAN Member States. The rich and diverse cultural melodies blended with the distinctive sounds of the carillon, carrying across the tranquil surroundings of Lake Burley Griffin and creating an evening of music filled with emotion and significance.

Held annually in Canberra, the ASEAN Day commemoration is not only an occasion to celebrate the region’s rich cultural identity and diversity, but also an opportunity to strengthen solidarity and friendship among ASEAN Member States. It further contributes to deepening ASEAN–Australia relations and advancing a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.
